How to Use Sea Salt Spray for Men

What is Sea Salt Spray?

Before we get into our step by step guide on how to use sea salt spray for men, it’s important to know exactly what you are putting in your hair and what it is supposed to accomplish. Sea salt spray is a hairstyling product that, as it sounds, naturally includes sea salt, however, it often also includes other compounds like clay, vitamins, and more depending on the sea salt spray brand you choose to use.

The main goal of the compounds used to develop sea salt spray is to help lightly bind to your hair and absorb moisture. Resulting in an increased level of texture and volume. That said, men’s sea salt spray is most commonly used as a pre-styler before applying an all-day hold hair product like hair clay or hair paste. However, if you are going for a very natural and super-light hold look, it can be used as a stand alone product. Now let’s dive into how to use Sea Salt Spray for men in 3 easy steps.

How to Use Sea Salt Spray

  • Step 1: Prep Your Hair

For the best results, wash your hair with shampoo and conditioner and towel drying when finished. You can, of course, skip the shower if desired but we do recommend applying sea salt spray on clean hair whenever possible. Also, if you have long hair that takes more time to dry. Rather than just towel drying, you can use a hairdryer to speed up the process. Using a hairdryer is also a great way to pre-style your hair and increase volume.
  • Step 2: How to Apply Sea Salt Spray
Once you have cleaned and dried your hair, it’s time to  apply your sea salt spray. Hold the sea salt spray bottle 8 to 10 inches from your hair and spray  between three and five pumps onto your hair directly and not into your hand or comb.  Next, use your hands to work the spray through your hair and closer to the roots.
Pro Tip: Don't over-apply sea salt spray. In some cases, using too much sea salt spray can dry out your hair and scalp causing your head to become itchy or flaky.
  • Step 3: Styling Your Hair

When using sea salt spray, most of the styling  can be done with your fingers, however, you can also use a comb if desired. With your fingers or comb, simply guide your hair in the direction you want it to lay and you should be good to go!

If you aren’t getting the look you want, try using a hairdryer on the cold setting in conjunction with a round brush. When used correctly this combination can not only help get your hair to lay in the direction you want it to, but also increase volume.
Note: Different hair types can sometimes be more difficult to style than others - which is why we broke down how to use sea salt spray by hair types below.

Styling Tips by Hair Type

  • How to Use Sea Salt Spray on Curly Hair?

Sea salt spray is great if you have curly hair as it can enhance the natural curls and waves of your hair type. To use sea salt spray with curly hair, spritz your hair lightly a few times, and use a hairdryer on the cold setting to help your hair's curls reach their maximum volume and avoid kinks.
  • How to Use Sea Salt Spray on Short Hair?

While sea salt spray is most commonly used on medium to long hair, if you have short hair, you can use sea salt spray to keep your hair standing up rather than sitting flat. Spray a few pumps on  your hair then run your hand from your forehead to the back of your head.
  • How to Use Sea Salt Spray on Straight Hair?

If you have straight hair, pump a few sprays into your hair then take a comb and/or hairdryer (on cold setting) and style your hair as you’d like. You can often mold straight hair into wavy hair depending on how much sea salt spray you use.
